The TransHoming Project

This project was created in April 2023 as a way to help transgender and minority folks flee persecution from transphobic legislation and systematic oppression, and morphed into a collective that helps LGBTQ+ individuals find resources for housing, food, clothing, and more.

We accomplish this through:

  • Transgender resource lockers and centers

  • Facilitating short and long term roommate agreements

  • Providing transitional, temporary housing

  • Transportation and hauling services

  • Educating the public on minority issues and how to combat them

  • Working with local collectives to offer more services to those in need

  • Creating a safe environment for people to be themselves through communities and fellowship

ROOMMATE AGREEMENTS

Creating new homes takes a lot of time and resources, and getting approved for a rental is difficult if you are not already established in the state. That is why we created a system to set transgender people up with strongly established roommates. This way we can relieve the stress that comes with procuring a new place to live.

The system works by:

  1. Recognizing the rules and policies of the established roomate

  2. Considering the concerns and needs of the transgender refugee

  3. Pairing a roommate and refugee based on needs

  4. Introducing the two parties to see if they work well together

  5. Creating a living arrangement for both parties to sign that includes house rules and time-frame of cohabitation

  6. Transporting the refugee to their new home

If issues occur with the living situation we will attempt to find a new location that can temporarily house you. Unless you have given reason to suspect that you are a danger to those around you, in which case we will attempt to find alternate facilities that can accommodate your needs.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING

We are currently raising funds for a home that will be used for transitional housing.

Custom agreements will be made for each individual that will be housed on the property. These agreements will include information related to the timeframe of which they will be housed, who will pay for what expenses (if any), and any aid that may be needed for finding more permanent income and housing.

This provides us with the opportunity to work with these individuals one-on-one. That way we can give them all the tools they need to succeed once their stay is done. Whether these tools are as time-consuming as helping them file for disability, as complex as finding a college career, or as simple as going over job skills, we have everything a person needs to find their place in society.

TRANSPORTATION AND HAULING

We help with transportation of people and goods as needed. In 2023 we transported:

  • People to housing locations 5 times

  • Groceries and food 3 times

  • Numerous hauls for goods needed

TINY HOME COMMUNITIES

We have plans in the future to build a self sustaining, tiny home community in Washington State for people who are fleeing red states in the US.

The goal is to open a pathway to home ownership for those who may not have the chance to own due to work/housing discrimination, while simultaneously offering connection through local community.

In the community we plan to have resources for residents. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Community gardens

  • Pre-made meal services

  • Laundromat Services

  • A Community Gym

  • Job Hunting Resources and Programs

  • Disability Paperwork Assistance Programs

  • Financial Aid Paperwork Assistance Programs

  • Self-Defense Courses

  • Library and Literacy Clubs

  • One-on-one assistance tailored to your needs

Our goal is not only to provide the necessities, but to provide enrichment and stability.

In terms of construction, we will be partnering with organizations that remove plastic from our oceans and shorelines to use as building blocks for our housing and community structures.

We also plan to source hemp-based building materials for their sustainable and weatherproofing features. While we are on this planet, it is our duty to keep it from being polluted and destroyed more than it already has been.

We believe that it is possible to help both impoverished peoples, and the planet simultaneously.

WHY IS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?

Many red states in the US are currently passing discriminatory bills that are endangering the lives of LGBTQ+ youth and adults.

These laws include Florida's CS/SB 254, which PASSED in 2023 and allows for the legal kidnapping of a child who is likely to be "subjected to sex-reassignment prescriptions or procedures," whether or not it is the child receiving the treatment.
Florida's HB 1233 which is ADVANCING in 2024 redefines sex as immutable,  and states that transgender people do not exist or have equal rights under the law.
Or
SB 1438, which PASSED in 2023 and mirrors an anti-drag law in Tennessee which is so vague, it could potentially label Transgender people as sex offenders, which is passing alongside SB 1342, which PASSED in 2023 and allows for the death penalty for sex offender with 8 votes rather than majority vote.

With these bills in the works the safety of LGBTQ+ persons, their health providers, and their children are at risk. It is Imperative that we start relocating to blue sanctuary states before these bills become law.

With our project, we will ensure that those who cannot afford to quickly relocate on their own can seek proper shelter through us.

If the United States will not protect us, we will make our own sanctuary.
